Service Canada SIN office no longer issues SIN cards since 2014. Since then, a paper format was issued to replace the card version. This paper format is called the Confirmation of SIN paper and does not have any security features on the print. This letter was only printed from Service Canada office to confirm that your SIN belongs to the named person on the letter. Do keep in mind that what’s important is the numbers, not the card or the paper. Therefore, do not share your SIN lightly to anyone or any institution that legally requires you to use it.
The Confirmation of SIN letter is not intended to be used as an identification or an official letter from Service Canada.
If you have lost your SIN card, you will no longer be issued a new card. You will only receive the Confirmation of SIN letter. There are a few options to obtain this letter:
- Visit your local Service Canada centre in person with the appropriate documents.
- Submit your Confirmation of SIN letter requests through Service Canada’s online SIN request service.Â
- By mail. Complete the appropriate form(s) – NAS2120 – with supporting document attached and mail to SIN head office in Bathurst, NB.Â

July 20, 2022 11:58 amHello Jason,
There is no card version anymore since 2015. Service Canada only produces the paper version to confirm your SIN belongs to you.

January 10, 2023 10:42 amhello Ashok,
Service Canada no longer issue the plastic SIN card since around 2015. What is important is the number itself. Therefore, Service Canada SIN office informs the general public not to lightly disclose your SIN to anyone who has no legal authority to request your SIN.

January 23, 2023 10:21 amhi. I had my house broken into and all of my Id was stolen. What can I do to order my verification letter to confirm my sin number?

January 31, 2023 10:43 amHello Shawn,
I can only speak for the SIN program. In order to receive the Confirmation of SIN letter, it is best that you visit your nearest Service Canada centre with a Primary Document (e.g. provincial birth certification or an immigration document like citizenship certificate or PR card). Be sure to contact the credit bureau to flag your credit report file. Your SIN does not change lightly, please consult with an agent from Service Canada for more details.

February 11, 2023 2:51 pmHow do I report a Lost or stolen Sin Card?
nas2120
February 21, 2023 3:09 pmHello Michelle,
There is no need to report lost of SIN card since Service Canada no longer produces the card. If you are worried about identity fraud, you must contact the credit bureau such at Equifax or TransUnion to report potential identity fraud.

March 14, 2023 12:29 pmHello Raj,
Unfortunately, Service Canada no longer replace the actual plastic SIN card since 2015. In replacement, you will only receive a Confirmation of SIN letter.
